Perimet: The Spears & Cavalry

The strongest, boldest, and most loyal young men at the height of their prowess are chosen to become Spears of Perimet in their twentieth year. This provides two years of malehood to assess the candidate’s probability of success. Most of the Spears are the children of fathers who also serve or have served in the Spears. The Spears are equipped with the finest bronze armor and weapons and given special privileges that make service in the Spears a sought-after station. Spears must bear at least one child for the Rego and must retire when they reach the last day of their forty-ninth year, prior to becoming Matrons. A Matron of the Spears is then detailed to a village or city where she will provide the Rego with eyes and ears to ensure the proper actions of the Highborn. The Spears swear loyalty to the Rego for life, and for this, the Rego watches over them with care and love.

While the Spears come from any walk of life, the Cavalry comprises the Highborn. All the noblemen have served in the Cavalry, and it has become a prerequisite to gaining the Rego’s favor, along with the gifts that come with favor. An aspirant must be no more than twenty-five years of age and bring five horses of the finest lineage. He will then be tested for his riding ability and loyalty to the Rego. If accepted, the cavalryman will not bear children, but may serve on active duty until he is too old to be effective. The Cavalry is a fearsome weapon, well trained and capable of crushing victory in the proper conditions. These days, the Cavalry, like the Spears, engages in policing within the confines of the Great Wall, but it trains and stands ready to face the barbarians of Roko should they ever have the temerity to challenge the Rego as of old.
