The Bechdel & mako mori test app

stone.jpg

This app tests whether a book or a movie passes the Bechdel and Mako Mori tests for meaningful female representation. For decades, anyone interested in female representation in film AND LITERATURE has heard of the Bechdel-Wallace Test. It's simple, iconic, and often sobering in its results. But as conversations around media have evolved, so have the tools we use to analyze it. Enter the Mako Mori test, a newer, more nuanced metric that asks not just if women are present, but if they are important. The Malhela tetralogy passes the test. How does your favorite book or movie fare?

The Bechdel test:

  1. Does the work feature at least one female character?

  2. Does that character get her own narrative arc?

  3. Is that narrative arc not about supporting a man's story?

The Mako Mori Test. The work must have:

  1. At least one female character.

  2. Who gets her own narrative arc.

  3. That is not about supporting a man’s story.
